Funding for the Scholarships is drawn from the earnings of a permanent endowment built from the contributions of former students, athletes and faculty. The endowment fund is managed by The Northern Kentucky Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, a well-respected local community foundation.
This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior student-athlete at Highlands High School who plans to pursue a career in education. It is named for a coach and teacher who exemplified the finest in Highlands tradition. There is a plaque honoring recipients of the Scholarship near the entrance to the School Board office. The Scholarship is for a total of $10,000.00; $5,000.00 is awarded the first year, and an additional $5,000.00 the second year, provided the student is maintaining at least a B average and still pursuing a career in education. Sadly, we note the passing of Don Waddell, Judge Waddell's oldest son, on Friday, April 19, 2013. Don was one of the principal forces in the formation and maintenance of the Scholarship, served on the Advisory Committee from the beginning, and will be greatly missed.
